The weather was great! Gary and Joyce brought their little dogs, Sable and Miss Mouse, and with Rex, we had 3 dogs to join us on walks.
Jim arranged for us to do a tour of the Point San Luis light house! It was a beautiful afternoon and we all climbed aboard the tram to take us up to the lighthouse, which is located on a point of land to the north of the port of San Luis. In fact, you can't even see it from there.
The light house was build in 1890 and has been serving that area of the California coast ever since. We were able to tour the light house keeper's house, the actual light house and the visitor center. Our guide was very knowledgeable and we totally enjoyed the tour. It's on the "do again" list, and next time we'll take a picnic lunch and spend more time there.
Thanks, Jim for doing this - it was wonderful!!
The tram we boarded for the tour. The tram is called Lucy, after one of the light house keeper's daughter
The original breakwater under construction, with the light house in the background
The original light house and the keeper's and assistant keeper's houses
Port St. Luis was one of the busiest ports in California at one time
View of San Luis bay and wharfs from the trolley as we traveled to the light house
The original fresnel lens. It's no longer used as it's been replaced by electronic equipment that is more efficient
Gary, Joyce, Lee and Jim listening to our docent explain the workings of the light house
The light house keeper's house with the light house attached - we were able to go up into the tower where the fresnel lens once was
This is the equipment that now lights up the coast for ships at sea. Not nearly as romantic but I suppose that it's more effective....
We'd never seen this service before! I will definitely be looking for some of this at thrift shops and second-hand stores!
The view from the top!!
Another shot of San Luis Bay
The end of the tour! Pat, Jim, Lee, Joyce and Gary in front of "Lucy"!
I highly recommend this tour to anyone who is in the area
